Is Your Face Perfect?
Of course, not. Nobody is perfect. So, what guides do aesthetic dermatologists use in making recommendations for your facial rejuvenation?
The Golden Ratio
One tool is called PHI, divine proportion, the golden ratio, and even the Fibonacci Number. It’s based on work done by the 12th century Italian mathematician, Leonardo Fibonacci.
Fibonacci’s golden ratio is found everywhere: in nature, art, and even buildings. Architects and artists use of this ratio to create a more aesthetically beautiful design. Importantly, PHI can be used to guide treatment decisions in facial aesthetics. In fact, we at Aesthetic Dermatology and Skin Cancer: Jeffrey H. Binstock, M.D., believe in global facial rejuvenation based on PHI.
Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder; but in general, the closer the symmetry of a face is to the proportion 1.618, the more facially attractive you are likely to be to others.
What is your Fibonacci Number?
Determining your PHI starts by measuring the distance between the inner portion of your eyes (the intercanthal distance). This model shows the areas of the face that ideally share this distance (pink lines). Your PHI is then calculated by multiplying the distance between the eyes by 1.618, shown here as green lines.
The bottom line
Not perfect? Nobody is. But measuring these distances, and others, gives Dr. Binstock an essential guide to your facial rejuvenation using Fillers and Botox.
Perhaps the Beatles song says it best: “Something in the way she [or he] moves attracts me like no other lover…”
Attractiveness is about more than calculations and golden ratios. Psychologist Gordon Allport said that people have a consistency in how they express themselves. It’s found in how they walk and talk, their fitness, and even in their handwriting. People are also emotionally expressive; and those of us who spontaneously express positive emotions are likely to be more attractive to others.
As part of this overall picture, facial attractiveness can be enhanced. You can come closer to your goal through the use of well thought-out aesthetic procedures.
