Concerned About Discomfort During Treatment of Double Chin?
Kybella® (deoxycholic acid injection), now available at Aesthetic Dermatology and Skin Cancer: Jeffrey H. Binstock, M.D., is effective treatment for what is sometimes referred to as submental fat (aka double chin). You can now eliminate your double chin by injecting Kybella instead of having Liposuction.
It’s normal for people contemplating this treatment to ask about pain and swelling caused by the injections. In this recent study, researchers from across the U.S. and Canada answer this question.
Here’s what they did
A group of people with double chin were treated with Kybella. To reduce discomfort (pain and swelling), participants were treated with one of the following:
1. Cold pack
2. Cold pack plus a local anesthetic rubbed in and injected into the treated area
3. Treated as the second group plus an antihistamine and medicine for pain
4. Treated as the third group, with the addition of a chin strap
Here’s what they found
First, it was noted that pain was not a big problem for this group of participants. Within the first 5 minutes of Kybella treatment, they ranked their pain as “mild”. By 15 minutes, pain was “reduced substantially”; and by 4 hours, discomfort was described as “mild achiness” and “mild tenderness”.
Yes, this discomfort can be reduced with the use of a cold pack plus medications. The greatest reduction in pain (by 40%) was achieved by those in Group 3. Group 2 (cold pack plus anesthetic) also had a reduction in pain (by 17%) compared to Group 1 (cold pack).
Adding a chin strap to treatment did not reduce swelling.
The bottom line
Kybella, in the hands of Drs. Binstock, Layton, and Physician Assistant Cullinane, to treat double chin is well tolerated, as evidenced by these results.
Submental neck fat influences in the appearance of a youthful and pleasing neck, as well as in the overall attractiveness of the face. However, the full benefits are achieved when treatment of this area is combined with broader facial rejuvenation such as dermal fillers, Botox®, or laser resurfacing.
