Multiple colors require multiple lasers as each pigment (color) will absorb a different specific wavelength a light. The VersaPulse^® Aesthetic Laser (VPL) system includes four different lasers enabling us to treat the spectrum of tattoo colors. The easiest color to remove is black, and the hardest are yellow, orange, and sometimes green. The more colors that are in the tattoo, the more treatment sessions are necessary varying from six to fifteen and over. The sessions are generally four weeks apart and some residual pigment may remain resistant to complete removal.

During treatment, the energy of each specific laser beam interacts with a specific pigment color of the tattoo, breaking it into smaller pieces, which the body can then scavenge away. The tattoo exists because the particles are of a size such that the body cannot remove them. Red, yellow, and orange pigments are best removed with 532 nm laser or KTP, green with 755 nm alexandrite laser, black, blue, and purple with a 1064 nm ND YAG. Professional color tattoos are the hardest to removed because of number, density, and complexity of colors used.  Amateur black tattoos, as well as traumatic tattoos, respond quickly.
